Bio
Maya Mo Coleborn's primary mediums include painting, drawing and sculpture. Depicted in her abstract work are transforming bodies which engulf and become in a continuous dance of growing. Maya graduated from her BfA at The Ruskin School of Art in 2021 and completed an MA at The Royal College of Art in 2023. Her practice starts with drawing people close to her and incorporates intuitive gestures to reimagine those bodies, drawing from a pedagogy of history painting and story telling, into the forms that emerge and decay, leaving touch impressed on the work.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Maya Mo Coleborn works through drawing in its most expansive form, line creates bodies that emerge and decay in a churning space of possible encounter. Capturing expressive gestures that tumble into rumbling insides. She is working in an imagined space of layered gnarled roots and dancing figures, obscured folkloric imagery inspires an abstract recording of experience. These imageries sprout into transforming bodies which engulf and become in cycles of growing. Forms emerge and decay, leaving touch impressed on the work.
Maya is excited by creating works that propose familiar but abstracted moments of becoming, decay, emergence and gesture. Through her practice she explores depictions of this tacit knowledge in a hope to create tangible access to interaction and bodily encounter. What does it feel like to embody and what does it feel like to be engulfed?
